The Czech Indoor Gala in Ostrava was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the still ongoing indoor season. A sign of its quality is that five athletes who eventually dominated the entire series participated in this year’s edition.
For the third consecutive time, the Czech Indoor Gala enjoyed its place in the highest Gold tier of the World Athletics Indoor Tour. The Ostrava meeting again ranked among the top eight most prestigious indoor events of the season, placing fifth in terms of quality (ahead of Karlsruhe, Belgrade, and Madrid). The sold-out arena in Vítkovice certainly had plenty to see.
Hungarian 400m runner Atilla Molnár capped his performance with a new European all-time best of 45.01 seconds. Overall, in 9 of the 12 scheduled disciplines, meeting records were broken. For five of the winning performances, the World Lead mark was also recorded.
The program included six disciplines that were part of this year’s World Indoor Tour. In five of them, the future overall Tour winners competed in Ostrava: Dutch 400m runner Lieke Klaver, Ethiopian runner Birke Haylom, Belgian 800m runner Eliott Crestan, American shot putter Jordan Geist, and South African miler Thepo Tshite. The only athlete among the six Tour-scoring disciplines who did not eventually win the Tour was Polish hurdler Pia Skrzyszkowska, which was somewhat ironic, as her time of 7.78 seconds was one of the highest-quality performances of the meeting.
Among Czech athletes, only 400m runner Lurdes Gloria Manuel influenced the World Indoor Tour rankings, finishing fourth. The athlete coached by Laurent Meuwly first came third in Ostrava behind Lieke Klaver and Emma Zapletalová and then achieved the same placing in Toruń, where she was again beaten by Zapletalová and local favorite Natalie Bukowiecka.
The World Indoor Tour winners received not only financial rewards but also a wildcard entry for the March Indoor World Championships in Toruń.
